About
An expert in the field of narrative therapy, Mary earned a Master’s degree from Columbia University in narrative medicine, and a Master’s degree in clinical social work from the University of Minnesota.
Throughout her career as a psychotherapist, writer and visual artist, Mary has turned to the arts for their ability to provide depth, insight and healing for her clients. From teaching medical students to presenting at international conferences to developing expressive art and reflective writing programs, Mary’s use of the creative arts as adjunctive treatment tools has spanned over thirty years.
“It wasn’t until I began the process of writing about my past, of locating my story outside myself, that I was able to create order out of chaos, and put the pieces of my life back together again. ”
Excerpts from Mary’s memoir have been used in a number of educational curriculums, from Drexel University’s Creative Arts in Therapy doctoral program in Philadelphia, to the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City. Widely published in the areas of health and humanities, Mary is currently working on a collection of essays, titled Escape From Normal.
